US Senate passes bill to permit gas pipe in Alaska's Denali park

platts -- The US Senate on Tuesday approved a bill that would allow a natural gas pipeline to be built through the Denali National Park in Alaska.

"A natural gas pipeline route through the park would not only be less expensive to build, but could also take advantage of the existing utility corridor, preventing disturbances to wildlife and environmental impacts on undisturbed lands further to the east or west of the park boundary," Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican-Alaska, said in a statement Wednesday.

A shame as it defeats the whole puppose of our Denali National Park. Now some scheming Canadian pipeline corporations will pull an end play and piggyback on to this to get caustic Alberta tar sands bitumen to a sea port and on its way to China. Liquified natural gas is selling for a premium on the overseas market. The customers in this country won't see one BTU of that natural gas.

The permafrost is melting and causing the land to buckle and sink. Roads out there are starting to look like roller coaster rides.

We need the gas and some way to get it down south. So it makes sense to put it through an existing corridor. As for leaks - there's always a danger. So just do it safely!

At least someone is using their head and plan to limit the impact of this pipeline by keeping it within an existing right of way.
