TransCanada says Keystone XL will not affect climate

CBC News -- In a shift in strategy, the company that wants to build an oil pipeline from western Canada to Texas said Tuesday that the project will have no measurable effect on global warming.

Canada represents just 2% of global GHG emissions, therefore, the oilsands represent only 0.1% of it.

Opponents say the pipeline would carry "dirty oil" derived from tar sands that requires significantly more energy to produce than conventional crude oil and emits up to 20% more GHG.

Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University, said the comments appeared to be based on "some rather rosy assumptions" about oilsands production.

REALLY? No Measurable Effect On Global Warming? AMAZING! The project will have minimal effect but burning that oil will. Canadian Oil transported to the refineries on the Gulf Coast will be refined into fuel and sold on the world market for higher prices. There will be no cheaper fuel prices in the US or Canada. The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! The price at the pump needs to go down to $2/gallon - $3, $3.50/gallon or *$4.00 is Not the new low! More Refineries are Not the answer, Stop exporting fuel is! Take care of the domestic fuel market first and above all else! Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

As it stands when Pourbaix says, "...opponents of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline have grossly inflated its likely impact on emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming." He destroys his credibility.

It is more likely the hot air emanating from DC is the real climate changer to be feared because it is far more polluted than A bombs or pipes laying covered in the ground.
