States with the highest gas prices

24/7 Wall Street -- Did your recent trip to the gas station feel like it took a higher toll than normal on your wallet? It probably wasn’t your imagination. Average gasoline prices in the United States increased by 5.1 percent, or 17 cents a gallon, during July, according to the AAA July 2012 Monthly Gas Price Report. This was the first monthly increase since March. It was also the highest increase in prices for the month of July since at least 2000 -- the first year AAA began recording prices.

“Higher global oil prices and increased demand for gasoline during the busy summer driving season were the primary factors that sent pump prices higher in July,” AAA spokesman Avery Ash said in a statement. AAA went on to note than an increase in gas prices was due to “rising crude and ethanol prices,

Prices fluctuate across the country from coast to coast; hard to understand why.

hit 3.99 last week yet oil prices aren't anywhere near $148 this time around and wholesale gas prices certainly don't call for it.

still think the stations are only making pennies on the gallon?

What a bunch of bologna. The only reason for the high crude and gasoline prices is speculation.

"Where in Il. did they go? I live here our gas price is 3.94-3.95 for what seems forever! How long ago was this written?"

Consider yourself lucky because it is rare to find a station selling gas below $4.00 a gallon in the Chicago area. Most are $4.15 to $4.29. The last week saw a 44 cent increase.

"When Obama faked the Oath of Office gas prices were $1.79 per gallon nation wide!! Look at what you are paying for EVERYTHING today!! Numbers Don't Lie!"

You are right. Numbers don't lie, they just distort the truth. Gas was $4.12 a gallon in 2008. The Great Recession of 2008 caused an economic collapse and a decline in oil demand. This caused gas prices to drop to $1.79. Maybe gas prices will go back to $1.79 but be prepared to face the economic consequences.

"If you factor out the Great Lakes region which has been affected short-term by refinery problems and the pipeline leak in Wisconsin, I wonder how valid these numbers really are. Certainly needs more in-depth analysis than this article provides."

The Great Lakes factor added 3 cents to the national average for a gallon of gas.

Hate to break it to you, @KathySipsGas, but the price that any politician "wants" is irrelevant. It's the price we have that is what matters.

Get over this fantasy of going back to $2.00/gal gas. Those days are over. We burned that oil already. The oil that's left costs between $50 and $80 barrel just to get it out of the ground. That means $3.00 to $4.00/gal gas is here to stay. You can complain all you want but that doesn't change geology. The oil we have left is deep underground and is also deep under water. Big Oil is using technology that rivals NASA to get at this oil and we all know that NASA-level technology is never cheap.

The President faked the Oath of Office, @idigau22? Meanwhile, Chief Justice Rehnquist practically high-fived George Dubya on Inauguration Day in 2001 after handing over the election in Bush v. Gore.

In Al Gore's book from severAl years ago, he wanted $5 per gAl gas. Dont even want to think what outrageous price he wants now. Obama, in an interview while in the Senate, stated that he thought $5 was a "fair" price for the environment. Again, how much has his "fair" price increased in his head over the years. I guess $3.99 doesnt sound so bad compared to those idiots!

SC is lowest for one simple reason. The state tax per gallon is lower than the other states.

Drill, baby, drill just means more money in Big Oil's pocket as gas prices stay high, @bigdipperMS. There is no shortage of crude oil on the market.

Where do you wanna store all of this extra oil from "drill, baby, drill"?

Really @idigau22, you've been paying inflated gas prices in Washington since Jan 2008? I don't know about you but in Jan 2008, gas in New York was $2.20/gal.

Sure beat the $4.00/gal we were paying in August of 2008, when George Dubya was still occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

The average gas price in Indiana is $3.57??? WHERE? The average price right now is $3.91! Looks to me like NBC got the wrong "bottom line" on that news blurb. If you're in Illinois, don't bother, it's NOT much cheaper across the state line!

Prices in our area never did go down that much! We have been paying over inflated gas prices since Jan. of 2008!! The Economy is in the toilet! Unemployment is at 8.43% The cost of all everyday goods and services are skyrocketing!!!

How Is That Whole "Hopie - Changie" Thing Working Out For Ya???

Want more of the same?? You know who to vote for in November!!

This article is a joke. They have Michigan having an average price of $3.71. Not so, the average price here in Michigan is $3.99. So much for 24/7 Wall Street article being accurate.

Yeah, well if government stopped give all those tax breaks to Big Oil, they wouldn't need to raise gas taxes to pay for them, @tobin2010.
