Mazda wraps up U.S. production as last sedan rolls off line

Detroit Free Press -- The last Mazda6 rolled off the assembly line in Flat Rock on Friday, marking the end of production for the Japanese automaker in the U.S., less than a week before the 2014 model makes its world debut at the Moscow auto show.

AutoAlliance International in Flat Rock is Mazda's joint venture with Ford, and the plant also makes the Ford Mustang.

Mazda decided to move production of the next generation of the midsize Mazda6 to Japan. Ford will use the vacated space in the 50/50 joint venture to boost production of the all-new 2013 Ford Fusion that will go on sale this fall.

Mazda is not giving up its 50% ownership.

Ford has three shifts of Fusion production in Mexico but thinks demand for the all-new 2013 model will warrant more capacity.

What do you mean, @ExplorerWA? Those Mazdas were made in America, in a 50/50 partnership with Ford.

Ford and Mazda have been together for a long time. In the 80's I had a mazda pickup. It was about the same thing as the ford ranger.

If they move production out of the US they should give up ownership.

This shows the business mind of Ford Motor Company. If this happened to GM or Chrysler they would have closed the plant and left hundreds without a job.
