Livestock farmers seek pause in ethanol production

MyWay News -- WASHINGTON (AP) - Livestock farmers and ranchers seeing their feed costs rise because of the worst drought in a quarter-century are demanding that the Environmental Protection Agency waive production requirements for corn-based ethanol.

The Obama administration sees no need for a waiver, siding with corn growers - many of them in presidential election battleground states Iowa and Ohio - who continue to support the mandate.

"If not now, when?" Randy Spronk, a Minnesota pork farmer, said of the EPA's authority to defer the ethanol production requirement when it threatens to severely harm the economy of a state or region. "Everyone should feel the pain of rationing."

Spronk, who is president-elect of the National Pork Producers Council, said livestock producers will have to reduce their he

Smithfield buys corn from Brazil for its pork.
Then politician calls him Henny Penny. A politician doesn't believe what a business owner tells him that he did to survive. This is reality, not predicting.
Why is our corn more expensive than shipping it here from South America?

We need CNG vehicles which would help meet many of the goals, cheaper fuel to boost the economy, cleaner burning than gasoline, less co2, no ethanol needed so corn and food prices would come back to reasonable levels, no dependance on foreign oil, or money going abroad.

Problem is, the mandates still in affect and this country would keep making it even though we don't need any and would still export it to keep the industry going their way.

The government, she said, "is picking the ethanol industry to be the winner to get that bushel of corn."

This was what I was afraid of when the G. Bush mandates came out. Fuel for cars and exports come ahead of food for livestock and people. No one will do the right thing, even in an election year for fear of a backlash by others.

Again government making "false economies". Without the mandate, the ethanol industry would crumble.

Don't put that stuff in any of your small engines (lawnmower, weedeater, blower, etc.) unless you run them all the time. It will clog your fuel lines. I am glad there are gas stations that sell ethanol free gasoline. It's funny though. As I understand it, gasoline with ethanol is more expensive to make but gasoline without it cost more at the pump!

Ethanol has never been a good option. When the animal producers and people food are more important than they really need to stop corn for fuel. Not that I wanted ethanol in gas in the first place.

Certain things are for fuel and certain things are for food, leave corn to the feed part as it is bad for the air and cars.

Corn ethanol is one of the best examples of "Crony Capitalism." The only way I can see to stop it would be to elect more tea party conservative Republicans, and elect fewer establishment Republicans and liberal Democrats. Those last two groups just love Government spending and mandates.

Very little corn ethanol would be sold without the mandate.

I can not believe that the government isn't listening to the farmer. Let them feed their livestock for a better price by discontinuing ethanol at the present. I really don't think that is asking too much to ask.
