Gas drilling adds fuel to Pittsburgh's resurgence

The Morning Call -- Pittsburgh, once known as America's Steel City, is laying its RustbeltRust Belt heritage to rest by fostering growth in education and health services, while drawing strength from the booming natural-gas industry it keeps at a distance.

Drilling into Marcellus shale deposits is banned in Pittsburgh, yet hydraulic-fracturing, or fracking, operations in the countrysiSde nearby have helped bring in jobs and boost demand for office space in Pennsylvania's second-biggest city.

"Like eds and meds, like steel once was in Pittsburgh, it would be the industry to grow and employ people and turn the economy around," Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, 32, said of gas extraction. Nearby drilling can provide a "growth mechanism" the city can use to propel a rebound, he said. The city faced insolvency in late 2003,

While your at it show me a state that doesn't allow golf courses to use hundreds of times more water than drilling. You cannot, case closed. You see, there is a huge amount of deceiving information spouted out to the public about hydraulic fracturing, a decades-old technology. Those who spread this misinformation are mostly preying on the public's fears, with an ultimate goal of forcing state governments to succumb to that fear and prevent or even ban hydraulic fracturing. We need to make sure that the discussion is productive, and that any rules are legitimately conceived. Fact must be sEPArated from fiction. The most common claim talking point is that hydraulic fracturing contaminates ground water. This is baseless. Have you ever noticed that the critics who make that claim never provide concrete evidence? The reason for their omission? It is obvious why. After being used more than 1.2 million times there have been no confirmed cases of hydraulic fracturing contaminating water. None. Never. Ever. As EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said in April of 2012, "In no case have we made a definitive determination that the fracking process has caused chemicals to enter groundwater." The three "smoking gun" cases that the anti-shale zealots were sinking their teeth into have proven false or based on very poor science. See Pavillion WY, Dimoch, PA, and Parker County, TX. The latest fear mongering is "climate change" thru methane emission from hydraulic fracturing. Once again SCIENTIFIC investigation has shown the EPA using numbers that are overblown by 50%. Oh and the "evil Halliburton Loophole" talking point! LOL, what a joke. This is the errant claim born out of the yellow journalism of "gasland", a proven fraudulent film by Josh Fox, that hydraulic fracturing is "exempt" from the Safe Drinking Water Act, thanks to an energy bill passed by Congress in 2005. The truth??? SDWA has been the law of the land for nearly 40 years, and at no point has it ever covered hydraulic fracturing. Why??? States already tightly and effectively regulate the process. How can an industry be exempt from something that never covered you in the first place? But you hear this falsehood talking point most every time the subject comes up. It is important to rely on facts and the science, not fear-mongering talking points. The shale gas and oil boom is the result of U.S. business innovation and risk-taking. If we let the fear of undocumented pollution kill this boom, we will deserve our fate as a second-class industrial power.

What a deal this has become! Prove fracking does Not containment the ground water or shut up! Limit Fracking, protect the surface and ground waters, people, animals and the earth at all times! Fracking water and sand contains pollutants released from underground rock and brought to the surface: Lead, Methane, various gasses and chemicals, radioactive rock and materials and whatever else that may be contained in the underground rock or sand deposits. Do Not dispose of fracking waste water into the underground structure but 'treat' the fracking waste water for careful and safe release on the surface. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

In November 2010, the City Council banned the drilling, as it typically relies on the fracking process, in which a mix of water, sand and chemicals is injected into a shale bed deep underground to free trapped gas. "We all have children and grandchildren and as representative of District 1 and also as president of council, I need to be worried about the health, safety and welfare of the residents of Pittsburgh," council President Darlene Harris said in her City Hall office. She said gas companies should disclose more about their methods and be subject to tighter rules. More than 69 percent of city residents view fracking as a moderate or significant threat to public health, according to Emily Dutton Craig, a spokeswoman for a University of Pittsburgh research group that released a survey last month on the quality of life in the region. The potential negative effects of drilling may eclipse the devastation wreaked on the region by coal, which is taking a century and billions of dollars to mitigate, said David Masur, executive director of PennEnvironment Research and Policy Center. The Philadelphia-based organization has pressed for a suspension of gas drilling. Those who point to job and revenue gains from the industry are "shortsighted," he said. "You can make data tell any story you want," Masur said. "We know, as we've seen time and time again with these boom and bust economies, they often leave a huge legacy of social and environmental problems in their wake."
