Cameras are budget boon

Tampa Bay Online -- The city of Tampa has almost 2.3 million reasons to like red light cameras.

The photo-based system of ticketing traffic violators still generates plenty of controversy, and a bevy of mixed court decisions, but while the public debate simmers, the cameras are flashing at a dizzying pace. The automated system racks up traffic scofflaws at rates far higher than police ever could.

The numbers are adding up for cash-starved local governments.

"I'm surprised how much revenue we brought in," Tampa City Councilman Mike Suarez said of the $2.26 million the city has pulled in since November from red light camera violations at 24 intersections.

"I've also been told the Tampa Police Department has seen a reduction in crashes at intersections with red light cameras. Yes, we are making a little bit

The perception that I get is that people would rather bitch about the cameras than follow the rules of the road.

Doesn't surprise me. I say keep the cameras.

tomok: You are so naive.. Red Light cameras are part of Agenda 21 and promote you are "Guilty until proven innocent" concept. And yes the lights have been altered with yellow light timing and other defects. Red Light Cameras must GO, they are more defective that working and all to RAISE REVENUE for the local Government :(
Right on "defianceman" you know it andf New Orleans and Houston voters did vote to stop REd Light Cameras :)

Obey the traffic laws and red light cameras are not a problem. Drive over the speed limit, run red lights and cameras will record your offenses. Expect to pay the local government for your mistakes.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Not the whole story. MOST CITIES that put in the red light cameras will SHORTEN THE YELLOW LIGHTS to GENERATE MORE ILLEGAL TICKETS. It is a TAX INCREASE on the WORKERS, since the TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH have reduced the total taxes paid, they have to make it up somehow!!

Great, the only way to stop traffic violators is to hit them in the pocket book. The higher the price of a ticket combined with higher auto insurance help stop repeat offenders.

My niece got a ticket mailed to her that her son got by a red light. She paid it not knowing she didn't have too, as she was not the driver and was home.

Here Beltway Bandits install them for free at no cost to county/cities.
The Bandits get to keep 40 to 50% of the money collected.

What A Scam!

If you get one of these tickets, don't pay it.
They can't prove you were driving the car.
It's that simple if you've got the balls.

But they always tell us here that they are not to generate revenue but to improve safety. In fact most of the cameras are being taken out due to the fact the contract to lease and operate them costs much more than the fines collected.

Were the cost of these cameras mentioned in the article? The upkeep? It seems the only thing the politicians are looking at is the revenue? Did I miss something? Politicians not looking at unintended consequences?

Red light cameras cause accidents. I was rear ended by a F-150 pickup after stopping for one of these lights. He hit me hard enough to break my seat and total my car. Fortunately I just got the wind knocked out of me.

It's for public safety! Make sure the yellow light isn't too long. Now how do we waste... I mean blow... eh, spend all this revenue.
