BP Facing Lawsuits As Bad Gas Claims Rise To 7,900

CBS Chicago -- HAMMOND, Ind. — Facing at least two separate class-action lawsuits over contaminated gasoline in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin, BP said Tuesday that more than twice as much fuel was affected by the contamination than originally reported.

CBS 2’s Brad Edwards reports BP estimated 4.7 million gallons of gasoline were recalled from gas stations in the Chicago area, northwest Indiana, and the Milwaukee area.

That’s more than double the initial estimate of 2.1 million gallons of gas that had to be recalled last week, due to high levels of a polymer residue, which is difficult to burn in automobile engines.

As of Tuesday afternoon, BP had received 7,900 claims from customers needing repairs after receiving some of the tainted gasoline.

JoeKR: the Big Pretender has proven over and over that it does not care about the consequences. Making high profits is more important. If something happens to cause problems, they'll deal w/ it by jacking up the prices. Some of the BP stations here are the ones with the highest prices.

If only BP gasoline has the problem, it must almost certainly be caused by the BP additive package and not the base gasoline. Has BP given any more details of the cause other than a high level of "polymer residue"?

I find it unlikely that they could have added enough of their normal fuel additives to cause the problem.

It probably could have happened to any oil company but one must wonder is BP has a culture of corporate carelessnesss.

This BP screw up started at 2.1 million gallons then we find out it is really 4.7 million gallons. Sounds like the oil spill numbers that kept growing. Apparently BP has not learned much about lying to the public after all these years.

It's not British Petroleum anymore. It's just BP. And it's American owned. That being said, they are still mismanaged.......and I don't buy gas from them.
