It is 800 miles each way. We got lucky with the weather. We had only 1000 feet of ice the entire trip.

Split the cost with one other person and took a tiny car... still soooo expensive. It was still cheaper than flying though, especially considering we had two dogs with us who otherwise would have had to be boarded or something.

Heck, I could not afford a tree this year, much less a vacation to visit family or friends! Get used to higher gasoline prices, with the Republicans back in charge of the House or Senate prices always have historically gone up. Don't believe me?… Look it up! I want Americans to start building compact station wagon again. Maybe we could actually drive somewhere during the holidays, with our luggage and our dog. I know it doesn't sound too sexy, but look at the Audi A-4 Avant (wagon) or the VW Jetta Wagon with a new, clean-running, quiet Diesel Wagon. Plenty of room without the high ride height of a SUV, which kills the aerodynamics. Europeans love small, Sport Wagons and 5 door hatchbacks. Yes, there was a time I would rather walk than drive a wagon/hatchback…but that was long before 3 to 4 or $5 dollars a gallon gas. Let's be as smart as the Europeans before we wind up with their gas prices. Seriously, be good to each other, be polite on the road and have a wonderful, safe 2011!!!
