Here's some more:
The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways (commonly known as the Interstate Highway System, Interstate Freeway System or the Interstate) is a network of freeways that forms a part of the National Highway System of the United States.
As one of the components of the National Highway System, Interstate Highways improve the mobility of military troops to and from airports, seaports, rail terminals, and other military bases. Interstate Highways also connect to other roads that are a part of the Strategic Highway Network, a system of roads identified as critical to the U.S. Department of Defense.[28]
The system has also been used to facilitate evacuations in the face of hurricanes and other natural disasters. An option for maximizing traffic throughput on a highway is to reverse the flow of traffic on one side of a divider so that all lanes become outbound lanes. This procedure, known as contraflow lane reversal, has been employed several times for hurricane evacuations.

This bridge is part of the federal interstate system...think of it in military terms...what happens if you need to move troops between either sides of the Hudson. And since NY is "asking" for money, the Fed has a say in moving the project forward.

The TZB has been in renovation mode forever! How much you wanna bet that once the new bridge is finished, it's gonna need renovations right off the bat!
And why the surprise over toll prices?? Look at what they charge NOW at the George Washington Bridge ($12) and the Verranzano-Narrows ($13)!!
I'm telling ya...need to be a millionaire to live in NY!!

well, what's better? Let the bridge go and have ppl get killed (remember the bridge collapse a few years ago?) or build a new one and be rather safe?

170,000 per day at $14 each? That's $2,380,000 a day. It'll take almost 6 years to pay for itself. If you don't count the $5 it already costs, you have $9 in added revenue. That would take 9 years to pay for itself. So, at that point, the cost should drop back to $5, right? That's almost $1,000,000 a day in toll revenue! Should be plenty, right?

Tappan Zee Bridge? I love it because you can see the Manhattan skyline while crossing.

Feds give NY approval to replace Tappan Zee Bridge, 'The bridge's replacement is one of the nation's largest public works projects which was revived by Gov. Cuomo earlier this year after languishing in federal and state red tape for decades.' But, $5 Billion for a bridge, a low interest federal loan for $2.9 Billion, more than twice the toll after it's built and few jobs until next year, this is very wrong! Just in time for Fred's November election! Will wonders never cease how fast things get approved when it's someone’s potential election advantage opportunity! 'Coming out of the closet' Fred's lousy, smoke and mirrors, lack of jobs, dog and pony show and in the crapper economy, the jobs are Not here. Fred's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population and the job numbers continue to be down – no matter how smoooooth talking Fred spins those numbers! People will still drive and buy fuel no matter what but it sure helps to have a job too! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

I still don't see why New York needs to ask the Federal government for permission to replace a bridge that's entirely in New York.

Without all the corruption in construction for projects like this, I wonder what the real cost is to replace the bridge?

Also the New York State Thruway. My question, poorly stated, was really about the environmental impact statement.

I understand we need to build bridges, but man, that's a bunch of money. Somebody's getting soaked somewhere. It ends up being you and me. $14 to cross a bridge? Really?

We, of the land of fruits and nuts, toffurkey and dessert sushi, not to mention our best export: TRADER JOE'S, bring you "Carma-geddon II, the sequel". It wasn't so bad. For 4 days, people could actually tell misbehaving children, "Go play on the freeway".

Holy Crap! A $14 toll! Perhaps if they just enforced that now, they could get back to the trafic levels of the 50's when it was built. I would not pay that.

I love the Tappan Zee but the main reason I take it is because it was $5 one way now it will be cheaper to stay on the main interste through NYC.

Quote: "Why would anyone outside the NYC area be remotely interested in this article?"
Why indeed. This is because the same thing is happening all over the country. Bridges designed and built in the 1950's for 1950's traffic, are falling apart because in many cases, they are carrying loads that far exceed their original design or intent.
Some ask, why did they not plan for future traffic. To them, I say: Go out, become a Civil Engineer, do the traffic study, design for the future and then try to get it paid for. In every case, local boards holding the purse strings will NEVER pay to build for traffic they may have in the future, they will always insist that you build for the traffic we have today. Go ahead, try to explain to them that this bridge may stand for 50 or 100 years (depending on how much it is overloaded), and you need to take that into consideration. They will tell you that is some one else's problem. They are right, the board will have all new members before their shortsightedness bites them in the ass. They don't care.
That is what is wrong with the world today. Nobody cares. However, that is not new. It just seems that way.
