Average new car fuel economy rises in August

GasBuddy Blog -- The University of Michigan released it's average new car fuel economy for the month of August today, and likely due to a surge in gasoline prices, average new vehicle fuel efficiency rose.

The average new vehicle sold in August had a fuel economy of 23.8 miles per gallon, a 0.2mpg increase from July, and up 3.7mpg from when the study began in 2007.

In addition to the fuel economy study, the University also estimates the average amount of emissions generated by each motorist for the month. That index stood solid in June, the last month for which data is available, at 0.82. The number is found proportionally compared to October, 2007, for which is the first month the study was performed.

RufusQC Rookie Author Montreal Posts:2 Points:565 Joined:Mar 2012	Message Posted: Sep 28, 2012 6:48:27 PM Ignore RufusQC Report Abuse l have 2(two)Hyundai Excel's . my '91 has 215K miles .replaced the 155r13 with 185r13 and increased fuel economy from 35 to 42mpg and did a lot of hauling sometimes with a loaded construction materials up and down mountains.it probably has more than 215k miles because of the over sized tires and it still does not burn oil. its a parts car( a little bit rusty) now because three ago l picked a second which is a 94 which had 85k kilometers and it just turned 100k kilometers but only gets 35-37mpg because of 165r13 tires. almost as a good as a Toyota prius but MUCH cheaper as l paid 500$ for 91 10years ago and the 94 for a 1000$. body is super on the 94.

My Ford Fusion is rated for 23 mpg average, I've gotten 30 mpg average over the 35,000 miles I've logged on it, and I'm not alone. Go to fueleconomy.gov and look at real world estimates by the people who actually drive the cars, that will tell you what they actually get. Mine is a 2006 Fusion with the 5 speed manual, average user gets 28 mpg combined. Our own government is the domestic car's worse enemy.

Driving SUV's and single driver pickups that will never haul or tow anything does not help the average MPG either. Keep that ethanol crap out of the gasoline and the fuel MPG will be much better for all! Vehicles can get much higher MPG and the auto companies and Big Oil know that. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. I have a 13 year old Bi-fuel Contour that gets much better mileage per gallon then what is being reported here. Getting nearly 40 mpg on long trips using CNG or gas. This study is just another waste of our money in useless college studies. The Ford can fit a Fiat in the trunk and still get that mileage and carry 6 people in comfort.
