VW workers will have four 10-hour shifts

Tennessean -- Volkswagen is boosting production at its sole U.S. plant, though employees will have to spend fewer days a week to achieve that expansion.

The German automaker announced Tuesday that the plant that makes the popular Passat sedan will increase annual production by 30,000 cars next year.

Under the new system, workers will put in 10 hours per shift, but work only four days a week. The plant will be operational six days a week, for nearly 20 hours each day. Workers’ preferences were taken into account for scheduling details ranging from break times to when shifts will start and end.

The company said the new schedule is designed to cut down on overtime, maximize plant operations and help employees achieve a family-work balance.

“We will exceed what we had planned for 2012,” said Frank Fisch

Considering the options...sounds like a good deal getting 3 days off and commuting one less day per week.

Although I am now aged out of the work force, a 4 day schedule always sounded really sweet to me.

So who complains about working 40 hours a week? They are lucky these days to have a job.

Sound the alarm it's more socialism, there allowing workers off 3 days a week, we're going to be like France or some other socialistic European country.Once you start down that path.......

I have a relative working at this state-of-the-art plant who is working about 20 hours overtime. It seems like everyone is content there except the "unions".

I went from a 8 hour 5 day work week plus OT 4 days up to 6 hours a day, to a 10 hour 4 day work week plus up to 4 hours of OT a day, to a 3 day 13 hour an 20 minute work week 45 minutes OT a day. $150.00 to $225.00 less take home a week, but loved the 3 day working an 4 days off.

Germany has unions and they are very successful. After all, we taught them how to run things. They have more vacation time than we do too. Our country could still do it too if those in control wanted it that way.
