I have had my computer for 4 years now and have been making small upgrades along the way. How old is your computer and when do you know it's the right time to buy new?

My newest computer is an ASUS 11.6 inch laptop with a touch screen, Core i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 500 GB HD. I thought I wouldn't buy a Win8 machine any time soon, but this one came along at a price that made it attractive so I will have some experience when someone asks me about their Win8 computer.

The Jury is still out as to whether I like it.

My oldest computer is a portable XT with dual 5 1/4 floppies and no HD that dates to about 1988 or so.

Had a guy bring me a laptop today, said he'd like to see if it could be fixed even enough to "just" do Internet.
Looked at it and wrote on the Repair Order: MUSEUM PIECE, get this - the OEM sticker was for WindowsNT.

I just retired my Dell 8200, purchased eleven years ago. It was a real workhorse and still boots up in Win XP Pro.

Oh, and on my current computer, I am only using the CPU that came with it, still using the external hard drive that I apparently bought on January 29, 2010, the external DVD RW drive that I bought when the internal DVD RW drive that was in in my last computer stopped working in about 2011, the MS webcam that I bought in about 2012 when my HP webcam that came with my 2005 HP computer finally crapped out (a good 2 years after the HP computer stopped working, the computer worked for 5 years before developing a fatal hardware problem), the speakers I bought after the HP speakers gave out about 6 months ago, the Lexmark computer that I got after the HP printer gave out in about 2009, the Saitek Eclipse II that replaced a previous Saitek Eclipse II computer that developed a short about 4 months ago (this particular make/model of keyboard is necessary doe to my migraines that make brighter lights difficult for me to type by), my wireless mouse that I bought about a year ago and the CRT we have had for ages (cannot recall what computer it came with but it is marked Compaq which brand of computer I do not think has ever been owned by my husband or myself) and the modem is provided by my current ISP. In other words, I just took the POS CPU out of the system and replaced it with the new Dell-refurbished CPU.

Purchased on April 23, 2013 refurbished by Dell. Previous one was bought in mid 2010 - learned from that one to NEVER buy from a refurbisher other than a big name place that offers refurbished by the manufacturer AND that the computer includes a way to recover from any problems in the form of either a recovery disk or a recovery partition.

I have many older used PCs that I sell or used for parts, however my oldest computers I use on a regular basis are Pentium M based Toshiba laptops I use for wireless penetration testing and use as loaners.

My computer is so old that the pink rubber end is almost gone. I had to bite the metal around it to squeeze a little bit more of the pink rubber up so I could delete things. The other end is getting a little dull, so I will probably have to put it in that machine again soon and turn the handle a few times so that end of my computer will be sharper again. Everytime I do this though, it shortens the life of my computer.

Just built it a few months ago. I upgrade when it is no longer financially sensible to upgrade it. My last example being AM2+ motherboard and an abysmal 1060T hexacore processor. Today, I'm sporting a "decent" processor and motherboard, Z77 chipset with an Intel Core i5 3470.

I'm gonna get static for this, but if it ain't broke don't fix it. My 'home office' PC is a Dell 8200 going on ten years this spring; just card/memory upgrades, and a few added hard drives along the way. With a tight Windows XP Pro installation, it works great for surfing, email, light photo processing, etc.

Desktop - 4 years old
Laptop - 6 years old

Laptop needs replacing due to failing components.
The desktop can still perform admirably, but many recent games are not playable on her. A graphics card update can solve this problem.

You needs to update when the computer components start to fail, and/or you cannot run programs that are essential for operation. (Not games or novelty programs but essential programs)

"Dino" is a Dell Inspiron E1705- 8 years old, running Win 7 Pro 32bit (started with XP Pro)- only replaced a harddrive to increase space
"Patch" is a Dell XPS M1530- 4 years old, running Win 7 Ultimate 64bit- portable workstation- run over and Dell honored their Accidental coverage- only thing original is the top panel (all replaced about 3yrs ago)
"Duncan" is a Alienware- 1 year old, running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit- used for design work.

I'm not too sure. Certainly not over three years. I built it myself and I suppose I could eventually find the receipts for the parts but I'd guess it's between 2 and 3 years old.

yeah annoying when they change sockets, or even a small change...

I have some socket 775 boards that won't take Core2 chips... Talk about weird.

Currently all my Intel boards are either 1155 (one!) or 775 (several). Wish that new ram can be fit in older motherboards too... :( Would be nice if I could stick in big ddr3 dimms into my ddr2 machine...

5 years old and still chugging along. Still annoyed that intel jumped ship from their LGA1336 platform as I'm stuck with this system. Any upgrades will require a new CPU/Mobo/Memory at minimum.

hmm... I do have a >10 year old computer too... still being used (Athlon XP 2200+). It's starting to get quite slow, probably making it do too much, but mostly some configuration I need to redo to save RAM... Just that I need to wipe the hdds (RAID) to do it. Grr.

At least it's being constantly updated to the latest software so I don't need to worry too much about old security holes.

Using a 2 mon old laptop with Win7 now, but use a 5 yr old desktop that has XP, Ubuntu and Mint on it. Linux seems to breath life into my older machines.
