I just bought a new regulator for my 2001 Ranger XLT 3.0 Liter V-6 2wd. I've been searching a lot for illustrations on where the regulator is at. Didn't find anything. I'm assuming it's the grey box on the back of the alternator where the four wired plug plugs into. It also has the heater hose resting against it as well and I don't like that. Electronics don't last long when they are hot.

It started to cut off (charging power to zilch) at about 70 mph. Here lately it's been around 60 to 65 mph. But this afternoon I notice is at slower speeds like 55, then 50 and then limped it back between 40 to 45 mph or under 2,000 rpm's. Shorts trips I don't have any problems. Long trips I notice the problem. And the longer the drive is, the worse it gets.

It is not spiking up at idle. It maintains a voltage around 13.7 volts. But it drops off to about 11.0 volts over 2,000 engine rpm's. When I drop the engine rpm's below 2,000, the voltage goes back to 13.7 volts.

With the engine running, the voltage should be 13.8 to 14.0 volts. At 11.0 volts, the alternator isn't producing any electricity and the volt meter is showing battery power only.

I replaced to voltage regulator - it lasted about 1/2 a day when a copper wire attached to one of the brushes broke. I needed my truck and couldn't wait another 4 days for a warranty replacement part to be ordered. So I was reimburse for the faulty part and bought the lifetime warranty Duralast alternator instead. Haven't had a lick of problems since. Volt meter stays at 14.0 volts from idle all the way up to 70 mph on the freeways with the blower, radio and lights on.

Sounds like it's working just fine. When your battery is in the charged state { 12 volts }there is no need for it to charge more then it needs so 11.7 volts seems to be OK.
